SKIING
New Zealand offers great ski
opportunities especially in the South Island which is home to the Southern
Alps mountain range and a host of ski fields. Mt Hutt (Methven) Coronet Peak
and The Remarkables (Queenstown) are three of New Zealand’s premier Ski
Areas in this region.
Mt Hutt (Methven)
Mt Hutt, high
above the Canterbury Plains and in the heart of the Southern Alps, is all
about a great snow experience! The snow is light and reliable throughout the
long season and it’s on the mountain longer than any other ski area in
Australasia. Mt Hutt’s season runs from the end of May to the end of
October. . . with the Spring skiing being some of the best around!
Whether you are an absolute beginner or an advanced powder hound, if you are
into skiing or boarding then Mt Hutt is the place to do it. The awesome off
trail opportunities and the immense runs off the Triple Chair make Mt Hutt a
favourite with boarders. The wide, open trails provide easy learning for
novice skiers and excellent terrain to build on your existing skills.
Coronet Peak (Queenstown)
New
Zealand's most famous snow resort, Coronet Peak sets the scene for some
awesome snow action!
This is a mountain that's blessed with fantastic, varied natural terrain,
outstanding views over Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu, and world class ski
runs to suit all abilities of skiers and boarders. Everyone can ski like a
pro at Coronet Peak - there are dedicated slopes for first timers, long wide
groomed trails and plenty of choice for more experienced skiers. Once you
know the ropes, you'll enjoy the vertical off the express quad, or exploring
the rolling terrain with plenty of dips and drops for great variety.
If skiing all day just isn't enough, Coronet Peak lets you ski at night as
well, allowing you to make the most of your Ski Express holiday (Friday and
Saturday nights, mid-July to mid-September). There's plenty of après ski
activity at Coronet Peak too - relax in the brasserie, soak up the sun and
the views. There is nothing to compare with this experience. Ski Express
also has great prices on rental packages for all your gear including
clothing, skis, boards and boots, the all-important ski and snowboarding
school, along with club and crèche facilities for the kids.
The Remarkables
(Queenstown)
The Remarkables
is set in a vast natural amphitheatre high in the rugged ranges at the
eastern end of Queenstown’s Lake Wakatipu. Being so far up is a major plus,
giving the ski field a long, reliable season – and the north facing aspect
makes it a natural sun-trap.
It’s the best place in Queenstown to learn to ski, with a series of
sheltered bowls all accessed by chair lifts. Nearly three quarters of the
slopes are rated beginner to intermediate – but there’s still plenty of
off-piste challenge if you’re inclined towards the extreme. The long
Homeward Bound powder run is huge – ski down to the access road for a truck
pick up back to base.
The Remarkables prides itself on the incredible family facilities and
celebrates this feature with the renowned “Remarkables Spring Carnival” in
September. Click the link below to check on ski packages.
